Yep, just heard on the radio that our wonderful governator helped push through and signed the ban on trans fats in restaraunts. Never mind that the evidence that trans fats cause any more harm than regular fats is tenuous at best. Never mind that it is not banned from other products in the state, just restaraunts.
No, it is good to have a government monitor my health for me. Maybe next we can ban cigarettes and fast food. And lets get rid of candy and soda, because those can cause diabetes and obesity. At the same time lets mandate a certain level of physical fitness in our citizens and have the police enforce that. And we will mandate condom usage for all sexual encounters, because we can't risk letting citizens get diseases.
And we definitely must get rid of peanuts and aspirin, because some people die from allergic reactions to both of those, and lets ban all the other NSAIDs as well, because there is some statistical data that shows increased risk of certain illnesses for chronic users.
Now that I think about it, the biggest health risk that we all have is living. Did you know that 100% of all living people end up dying eventually? That is a very frightening statistic, and one that we should all bear in mind when I propose my new legislation, banning life, because life is the one guaranteed cause of death, and what is your quality of life like knowing that all you have to look forward to is death. I think that will solve all of the problems.

Transfats tastes sooo yummy. I'm having some right now...its in the Bacon impregnated SPAM I'm eating.
But think about it....for years Arnold's thing has been his crusade against childhood obesity and health and nutrition. He really believes this shit. But I hear you, It's "feel-good" legislation at best.
I heard that the American Heart Association recommends a daily trans fat intake be limited to 2 grams, with Saturated fat limited to 19 grams. The thing is, even the American Heart Association believes that food companies have made much ado about nothing. However, industry reps have confirmed (watched Wall Street Insiders on Turner) that having a "No Trans Fat" label on your product has had an impact on shopper's decisions regarding choosing between competing brands...its been a great marketing trick. But the AMA strongly feels that the original message has been lost, somewhat...that both Trans Fatty and Saturated Fat are both less healthy alternatives.
I ate at Popeyes chicken on Monday afternoon. They are now no longer frying their chicken in Transfat oil...BUT IT'S STILL SWIMMING IN A POOL OF BOILING SATURATED FAT! But folks eat that shit up thinking its better for you than Mom's generation of Fried Chicken...BULLSHIT.
I've got to disagree Paul.
Sure this does play into the hands of the non-trans-fat grease manufacturers - some of which are just a different flavor of bad health. But also the very healthy oils are seeing a huge boost by this which I feel is great!! Not to mention the educational value. I remember 20 years ago - it was corn oil or crisco - that was your choice - neither of which did your body any favors. Now most of the public is aware of (and many buy) all sorts of delightful oils from things as varied as walnuts, avocados, rape seed (unblended canola for you heathens) and of course the mighty olive plus a host of others I can't think of which taste great and won't kill you. Don't throw out the baby with the bath water.
Also, the fact is that although you can pick your restaurant, you can't choose the oil a restaurant puts in their fryer - and 99% of them have been selecting oil based on price/profit without regard for health resulting in the cheapest nastiest oil possible. What you do with your life after you pay your check is your problem. It's a clear case of where the capitalist profit motives will NOT act in the interest of the population at large - and it is the responsibility of the Government to fill the role of defending us when profit motive conflicts with the greater good.
As individuals we're helpless to request better oil in their fryers. They would laugh and spit on your chicken before frying it and then accidentally hit a few extra button$ when ringing you up.
How is a public health standard to improve oil quality any different than insisting employees wash their hands, testing the temperature of the refrigerators, checking for cockroaches and rat turds and surface borne disease lab cultures? In my opinion this oil law is only so late in coming because unlike food poisoning in which you can identify the bad restaurant immediately - heart disease takes a lifetime to build up and thus the restaurants are untraceable
So I don't mind this law. You can chug a pint of motor oil in the privacy of your home - smoke a cigarette, take a shit and lick your fingers. Nobody cares. It's America. But public establishments which profit off your basic need to eat, drink and breathe can and should be held to higher standards.
Lastly I just got back from the hospital -today- after my very first ever heart problem. This shit's not funny - watch what you eat. This morning my ticker went nuts - no idea of the problem yet, but all this hypothetical crap about diet becomes very real when it's you hooked up to the EKG machine....
Life certainly leads to death - I'm cool with that and was ready to die as I sat in traffic trying to get to the hospital. But make the time you've got less shitty by just taking care of the machine that you're a passenger in.
America is hilarious - so many Americans take far better care of their automobiles than their bodies....
