Joe Biden has a habit of continually putting his foot in his mouth; and I am not talking about the kind of gaffs that go largely ignored because they are inevitable mistakes for a person who makes his/her living by speaking in public. Most politicians have many of these types of mistakes - how often do we all fumble over words at times. Most times, these mistakes are picked up by comedians (and sometimes journalists) to poke a little fun at a politician or politics in general.
Biden spent a long time criticizing Bush's education policy and No Child Left Behind, and then concluded with the statement: “There’s less than 1 percent of the population of Iowa that is African American. There is probably less than 4 or 5 percent that are minorities. What is in Washington? So look, it goes back to what you start off with, what you’re dealing with.”

Anyway, that is not the only gaffe, but I do not want to rehash his long history of ignorant and arrogant statements, but one he made recently was incredibly stupid from a political standpoint. I don't remeber the exact quote, but he effectively said that within six months of being elected the world would test Obama the way it tested Kennedy. He implied that there would be some potentially catastrophic confrontation of Obama because of his lack of experience.
Whether this statement is correct or not, it shows an incredible lack of sophistication about national politics. The Republicans would probably never bring something like that up for fear of being called scaremongers or being too negative. But if Biden brings it up first, it all of a sudden becomes fair game. You go from being politically unable to touch the inexperience angle, and then Biden just opens the floodgates and makes that aspect of the debate relevant again.
Think about it. Biden basically says that because Obama is inexperienced, the world will test him - what exactly does that mean? It seems to express a real lack of confidence in his presidential candidate. That is not a good thing to have your running mate say less than a month before an election.
Just an observation, more later, but not on Biden - he is just another boring racist elitist, and there is lots of proof of that from his own mouth.

I saw this last night...wow...was he on drugs? He is an elitist AND arrogant. Alot like me, minus the overt racism. Re. racists, it was interesting that Rush and Hannity called Powell a racist yesterday. Even more hypocritic is how Rush, the guy who coined the term "Femi-Nazi's", would dare to call anyone who doesn't support Palin as "sexist"...now THAT is pure hilarity.
Prof., just so that I can hear a "Fair and Balanced" perspective regarding the Republican's most recent campaign podium rhetoric, please, please, please explain how they think its reasonable to suggest that Obama is an Anti-American Muslim and member of an Al-Queda sleeper cell? How chanting the "N" word at Palin rallies and swinging Monkey stuffed animals on the end of nooses and screaming calls for Obama's death is somehow morally equivalent to calling Palin an idiot?
Regarding negative campaigning, I've come to a realization that we will never do away with it...especially when a candidate is in the underdog position. No doubt the liberals are just as vile; just look at the blogshere and the rhetoric regarding Voting "NO" on Prop 8. And you can probably remember Bush's smear of McCain in 2000 and his famous line in the Primary Debate when he pointed his finger at Bush and said, "You should be ashamed of yourself!" Now THAT is the McCain I know and love.
But my point has always been that all negative attacks must at least pass one and only one test for political legitamcy: Is it rationally conceivable that one can answer "YES" to the question. Let me explain: Is it rational and conceivable to suggest that Obama is an arrogant elitist?...YES. Is it rational and conceivable to suggest that Palin is a moron?..YES. Is it rational and conceivable to call Biden an uninspiring hack?..YES. Is it rational and conceivable to suggest that Obama is a member of a terrorist sleeper cell and an Un-American Muslim?...NO. And yet you hear it suggested on the podium; not from the surrogates, not from "gotcha" media soundbytes, not from regretful off-hand comments, but directly from the candidates themselves...over and over again, and unapologetic at that. Even other fair minded Republicans have demanded the McCain campaign to put an end to it.
Also, I need to know the difference between "voter registration fraud" and "election fraud", ie. dismissing voter rolls arbitrarily. Is Mickey Mouse really going to show up and vote? No. But are votes for Obama in urban Ohio going to be thrown out? THAT scares me way more than a bunch of idiots filling out registration forms for Disney characters. Does an exgagerrated depiction of the former justify the latter? Or do you see them as morally equivalent?
You have to understand, I watch Fox News and listen to conservative radio my friend. I read conservative propoganda blogs and read its comments from citizens (which you can imagine are quite scary). I actually enjoy analyzing the conservative psyche. And many times they have succeeded in shedding light on my own brainwashed liberal political thinking...and I appreaciate that.
But Prof., are Republicans ever at fault with you? Can they do no wrong in your eyes? Let me know.
